The Great Gatsby - Reading Group 1

Hello year 12s,

I am sure you will agree, Ms Lindsay's talk on American history and the creation of the American Dream was a both fascinating and valuable way to kick start our discussion of The Great Gatsby. You can find the link to her PowerPoint presentation here:

I was really interested to hear your initial views on the characters and how you felt about their behaviour. Here is what we spoke about:
  • Our strong dislike for Tom, especially for his treatment of Daisy and his violence towards Myrtle.
  • Our frustration at Daisy's acceptance of Tom's affair and apparent disregard for her child.
  • Our initial impressions of Nick and his growing interest in Jordan Baker. We also touched briefly on his sexuality.
  • Our distrust of Jordan Baker and confusion over her place in the novel. We found it strange that she should be spending so much time with Tom and Daisy.
Our next meeting will be on Monday 13th March at 3.15pm in room L108. You will need to have read up to page 140. Ms Lindsay will begin with some relevant context for 'Streetcar' before we discuss the middle part of The Great Gatsby.

Have a lovely weekend,

Miss Ryall
